    Kindergarten Visits the Biology Lab

    Kindergarten Visits the Biology Lab

The AP Biology students were excited to welcome the kindergarteners to the Biology Lab on Thursday morning for a tour of different scientific tools and equipment at various stations. Kindergarteners acted as young scientists by making observations and coming up with more questions as they learned about the questions addressed at each station: 1) Why and how do scientists use micropipettes? 2) Why do scientists use microscopes? 3) Why and how do scientists use calipers? 4) Why do scientists collect data 5) Why do scientists use models?

Kindergarten then "left their mark" on the lab by getting to write their names using chalk markers on the lab tables. They were able to extend their learning back in the classroom by writing a reflection about their experience and the different scientific tools and equipment they got to use. What an exciting morning filled with clams, birds, microorganisms, a heart, brain, skeleton and even some micropipette art! Please click on the headline for more photos and kindergarten reflection notes.

2nd Lt. Jackson Jennings visits second grade

Class of 2018 Alumnus Visits Second Grade

    MJ
2nd Lieutenant Jackson Jennings '18 stopped by the second grade this week to thank the students for their letters that they wrote to him while he was in the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School last year. He brought the letters back so students could see how far they've come with their writing skills, and he answered questions about what it's like to be a Marine. Thank you, Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Isaacson, for taking time out of the busy end-of-year schedule to allow him to express his gratitude!

  • Seventh Graders Take Us Back in Time

Seventh Graders Take Us Back in Time

After becoming a site for global expedition, the WAC was transformed into a hall of famous figures for the Night of the Notables. This seventh-grade capstone project gives students the opportunity to share a notable figure from the 20th century with the SES community. Seventh graders researched and embodied inspirational individuals, such as Lilly Pulitzer, Steve Irwin, Shirley Temple, Jimmy Buffet and many more. Then, faculty, staff, families and fellow students walked throughout the impressively decorated WAC to ask questions about the details of their lives. The seventh grade students amazed everyone who ventured into the festival, and we are so proud of their journey toward becoming eighth graders. Click here for a downloadable album of photos from the event.

  • Choir members learn Disney performance tips

    Vocalists Take on Mickey

    DC
On Friday, May 17, the Upper School Choir, alongside the eighth grade singers, went to Disney's Imagination Campus for a Vocal Workshop. During this 2.5 hour workshop, student vocalists worked with a Disney music professional who gave them group singing lessons and shared insights about the high expectations of being a professional singer and how to succeed in the entertainment field.

Students learned a repertoire of Disney music and honed fundamental skills including breath control, diction and sight-reading. They also discussed how phrasing and dynamics can add emotion to any piece of music.
The session culminated with a screening of their recorded work set to Disney film footage! It was an unforgettable experience for all.

  • Sixth grader RJ shows us his best jiu-jitsu pose as he represents the country of Brazil.

Sixth Graders Take Us on a Global Expedition

SES sixth graders took us on a global expedition as part of their end-of-year capstone project. The Global Expedition Project (GEP) is a sixth-grade cross-curricular capstone project that includes the history, science and English departments. Students engage in a semester-long study of their assigned country with four focus areas: science, history, research and technology skills. The project concludes with a Global Expedition Festival, where students will share and present their final projects.

At the recent Global Expedition Festival, their explorations were displayed wonderfully in the WAC. Among poster boards of extensive research, each student brought in cultural artifacts, served speciality food dishes and beverages and dressed in outfits representative and authentic to their country. They became worldwide experts, listing off fun facts and intricate details about their countries from memory.

We are so proud of our sixth graders and excited to see their continued academic success in seventh grade! Please click here for a downloadable album of photos from the festival.

ICYMI: A Question for Mother's Day

A few days before Mother's Day, we asked our middle and upper school students an important question as they walked through the halls. Our filming studio was simple: a camera, microphone and giant whiteboard that read "What do you admire about your mom?"

Despite the normal silliness we witness among the student crowds, we received many heartfelt responses. In case you missed our Mother's Day video on social media, click here to watch it now. We love our Pirate moms!

The Parents Association Shares 2024-2025 Proposed Board Slate

    MJ
After a busy week of Teacher Appreciation activities, the Parents Association is sharing the proposed Board slate for the 2024-2025 school year. This slate will be subject to a vote at the next "all school" meeting on May 3rd at 8:15am in the Glass Room of the Peter B. Benedict Library. You'll notice there's a "TBD" next to the Trunk Show Chairs. The Board is actively seeking a team of two to lead the biggest fundraiser of the year. Think about it!

Plan to stick around to watch the Class of 2024 ABC Day -- it's sure to deliver on creativity, laughs and maybe a few tears on the last official day as seniors. See you on the 1st.

  • Savannah Brown and her mother Frances grace the cover of Vero Beach Magazine

Watch for the May Issue of Vero Beach Magazine

    MJ
Earlier this year, a number of upper school students voluntarily took a teen writing class with the Laura Riding Jackson Foundation, and the assignment was to write a letter to their mothers in time for Mother's Day. The editors at Vero Beach Magazine were so taken with the concept that they decided to do a feature story. Of the seven winners, six were Saint Edward's School students. Keep your eyes on the mailbox because there's a very familiar face on the cover. Junior Savannah Brown and her mother Frances grace the cover of the issue. We haven't received our issues yet, but you can bet an entire ship of Pirates will be excited to read the story and see who the other five writers are!

  • Junior Harrison Reicher carries a cement oyster reef ball towards the shoreline at Riverside Park.

Marine Science Students Volunteer With ORCA: The Living Shoreline Project

Marine science students demonstrated their dedication to environmental stewardship within our community for Earth Day. Students worked together with ORCA scientists to place large 50-pound cement oyster reef balls at Riverside Park as part of their Living Shorelines Restoration Project to protect the shoreline from erosion, restore vital estuarine oyster habitat and improve water quality in the Indian River Lagoon estuary. We are proud of their hard work and dedication to improving our lagoon ecosystem!

How the Project Works and Helps the IRL:
The oyster reef balls offer a substrate for oyster growth, which in turn offers habitat for fishes, shrimps, crabs and birds who feed on these organisms. They improve water quality, because one oyster filters 50 gallons of water a day, and it reduces wave energy and turbidity in the water. The reduction in wave energy then reduces erosion of the land there, which occurs when the waves hit the shore. The eroded sediment from the land covers the seagrass beds, so reducing this sediment going into the water supports seagrass growth.

Click here to view highlights from the afternoon at Riverside Park, and be sure to join ORCA on April 30 to check out the new living shoreline.

Senior Luke Damiani Inspires Peers With Chapel Speech

Senior Luke Damiani spoke to his middle and upper school peers on Thursday, April 18. The title of his sermon was Choices. He began his speech by sharing an interesting realization: he had reached a point in life where younger students looked up to him and strived to be like him when they got older. With this in mind, he explained to the assembly of students and faculty that everyday you make choices, and as you get older, these choices get more and more challenging. He makes his choices by setting goals and committing to a routine. He emphasized the challenge of figuring out who you are and what you want in life, but highlighted the importance of reflecting on your time and thinking about what you want to do differently every day. Luke wrapped up his speech with inspiring advice, "Be grateful for what makes you unique and be grateful for what makes you who you are."

Thank you, Luke, for sharing with the SES community, and good luck to you in all of your future endeavors.

  • Juniors Rushil Sura and Max Plotkin deliver their Humorous Speeches.

The Juniors Have Jokes and the Freshmen Have Persuasion

In the spring, juniors are given an assignment to brainstorm, write and deliver a speech that will showcase their ability to produce laughter among a crowd. At the same time, freshmen are tasked with a similar project. They must craft a speech that persuades the audience on a chosen opinion. After many rounds in the classroom, finalists were chosen to present their speeches in front of the entire Upper School. Congratulations to the finalists: juniors Patrick MacMullan, Sommer Soderman, Keegan Nyman, Max Plotkin and Rushil Sura and freshmen Isabella Peter, Lily Browning and Tullia Knight.

From topics among juniors such as "What Is the Real South?" and topics from freshmen such as "Why Barbie Is an Empowering Role Model," it was a tough job for the faculty to decide upon the winners of the Humorous Speeches and the Persuasive Speeches. In the end, Max Plotkin and Rushil Sura and Lily Browning were the respective winners of the Humorous Speeches and the Persuasive Speeches. Congratulations to Max and Rushil for successfully preparing speeches that were written eloquently, delivered confidently and received humorously among students and faculty, and congratulations for Lily for successfully arguing for a passionate issue.

Juniors volunteered to spend two Saturdays in March and April constructing homes with Habitat for Humanity. Senior volunteers spent their Saturday on April 13 at Shining Light Garden, a non-profit organization that has been growing fresh vegetables for over 10 years to help feed the homeless, hungry and forgotten. Thank you to all of the student, faculty and staff volunteers who helped organize these projects and offer their time to help give back to the community. He screamed "YES" at the top of his lungs and it made everyone including myself laugh hysterically. I genuinely believe that the whole course heard him cheer. That one moment made my horrible day on the golf course worth it!
    4) Favorite class and/or teacher: My favorite teacher at SES is Mrs. Nelson. She is the kindest person I have ever met and has helped me with many problems for both her class and my personal life. I remeber when a college acceptance letter was being released and I laid on her floor for 20 mins since I almost passed out. During those 20 mins she gave me reassurance and confidence in myself and my academics. I took both classes Marine Science and Ecology and they were periods of my day I looked forward too. She would have amazing labs where we would go kayaking or exploring different kinds of habitats. Mrs. Nelson has helped my understanding and love for Marine life grow while helping me become a better person.
    5) Proudest SES achievement: Taking part of a Marine Ecology research project that got accepted into the Indian River Symposium and presenting our work to other scientists.
    6) Piece of advice for current SES students: Always try to find the positives. Even in tough situations sometimes finding small positives can make the world of a difference.

  • The 2024 Easter Chapel

    All School Easter Chapel

    MJ
The Waxlax Theatre was standing room only yesterday when the entire School gathered together for the annual Easter Chapel. Father Barrett led the audience through the Easter story, which is no easy task when the audience ranges from age 5 to 65. Students from each division read Biblical passages while the upper school brass accompanied upper and middle school choirs. It was a warm and wonderful opportunity to gather as a community, reflect as a group and take a moment to celebrate the blessings of spring. Thank you, Father Barrett, and all of the teachers and students who helped create such a wonderful event.

Senior Girls Claim Double Powderpuff Victory

The Friday before Spring Break was a jam-packed day with petting zoos, coloring, games and quality time with pals from the Wabasso School. Right before students were dismissed for their break, junior and senior girls faced off in the Pirate Stadium for the annual Powderpuff game. Keeping their winning streak alive, the seniors won the showdown, just like they did as juniors last year. Mr. MacMullan would also like to clear up a few rumors and state that "the result had nothing to do with the stellar refereeing."

SES Thespians Are "One Step Closer To Being Famous"

The SES Theatre Department's dedication became quite evident last week, when students Jack Engel, Owen Miller, Cavanaugh Corrie, Savannah Brown and Sophia Cetrulo traveled with the Bakers to the State Thespian Competition during their time off from school.

Senior Owen Miller says, "I had a lot of fun at the state competition this year during my Spring Break. My favorite activity while I was there was participating in the workshops they offered. My favorite workshop that I did would either be learning Hamilton Choreo or the Beetlejuice Choreo. I am pleased to have scored a Superior on my monologues and would recommend future thespians to experience this competition."

Junior Jack Engel proclaims, "We’re all one step closer to being famous! Thank you Mrs. and Mr. Baker for such a spectacular opportunity! I proudly represent… troupe 601…… 1 🤩"

This talented group of thespians came home with all Superior and Excellent ratings, with Owen Miller receiving a Superior for his monologue and Savannah Brown receiving a Superior for her song. Congratulations to all!

Students were grouped into small teams led by two upper school students who were their guides for the day. The group ended their time outdoors with a high school Q&A, getting to know their future peers and what to expect in their academic journey. Click here for a short highlight reel from the afternoon.

    Winter Watermark Released This Week

    MJ
Watch your mailboxes this week for the winter Watermark/Annual Report that celebrates "Girl Power." Beginning in September, our design team worked with the Development office to offer a unique and creative double cover issue. The campus and alumni news side celebrates the ASP students, and the Annual Report side celebrates the varsity volleyball team. Unfortunately, our printing partner (in the last step of production) assembled the covers backwards, which makes the issue appear very confusing. They are currently reprinting the overages, so if you would like a correct copy, please email the Marketing Department, and we'll make sure you receive one. Our printer is also sending a postcard to our entire community explaining their error. We're disappointed that this issue that was intended to celebrate the wonderful accomplishments of our girls on campus was compromised, but it certainly doesn't dim our pride for these young women who are already making their mark on the world.

  • D5 Alive Basketball Tournament

    D5 Alive Basketball Tournament

All are welcome to join Saint Edward's this weekend at the seventh annual D5 Alive Basketball Tournament.

The D5 Alive Foundation was established in loving memory of former student and coach Montavius Darell Flowers. Darell bravely battled Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC) and sadly lost his fight in 2015. This event is a celebration of Montavius' life and spirit and a critical platform to educate the community about early detection and screening for the Sickle Cell trait, which is vital in the fight against RMC.

To learn more, please visit the D5 Alive Foundation page: https://www.facebook.com/D5Alive/

  • ‘Building a Bridge’ to a Bright Future

    Kelly Hudson
Working together, our third-grade students had a blast creating K’NEX bridges. They got hands-on and had loads of fun learning about forces and how bridges are made. Guess what they found out quickly? Triangles make structures super strong!

Throughout this process, students participated in designing, building, testing, and improving their bridge designs. In a climactic “Index Card Challenge,” students tested their team’s bridge strength by stacking index card packets onto their bridge until it collapsed. The bridge that held the most index card packets from Mrs. Spadaro’s class was designed by Zoey Atkins, Georgie Harper, Austen He, and Katrin Walsh and held an impressive 72 packets. Team members Alexander Brown, Charlie Lenzner, Clara Shackelton, and Payton Clarkson from Mr. Schofield’s class held an amazing 142  packets on their bridge. This super-fun K’NEX bridge project served as a dynamic platform for our young learners to understand engineering concepts better while encouraging continuous improvement and critical thinking. You can click on this link to get a glimpse into the classroom.

  • A "Stitch" in Time

    Melissa Buza and Shelby Fontana
Several third, fourth and fifth-grade students in the Innovation Lab Studio opened the door to a whole new world of self-expression by exploring the fundamentals of sewing. Not just a practical skill, sewing is an art form that brings creative visions to life through fabric and thread. Selecting fabrics and learning the basics of sewing, students made cute pillows and a sports banner. This lifelong skill fosters patience, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. We are excited to add four new sewing machines to our Studio. We are excited to see what our young designers dream up!

  • Bingo Night, 2024

    Bingo!

    MJ
Last night's Parents Association Bingo was a big hit for all who attended, where Jack and Chris's mom, Cathy Curley, showed off her square-calling skills to a rapt and competitive audience from age 2 to 72! Pirates fought hard for cash prizes, Pirate's Booty cheese balls and hard-earned bragging rights. The Jones family won the raffle of a basket of family game night goodies, and one sweet little Pirate named Maggie donated her big prize back to the PA so all of her classmates could benefit even more from the funds raised to support the School.

There's already talk of another event in the future, so keep your eyes peeled for Bingo Night 2.0 -- it's sure to be an even bigger hit! Watch for an album of downloadable images next week.

  • Rosie's Walk in PK4

Students in PK4 read the story Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins in correlation with the Developing Roots Pre-K Math Curriculum and the lesson on positional terms.

We created an obstacle course in the classroom so the students could follow Rosie's walk and put the positional terms to use. They also had an opportunity to practice fine motor skills by tracing Rosie's path back to the henhouse. What a fun way to practice these important skills!
