Students Explore Spoken Word Poetry at LRJF Teen Writer Workshop

Last Saturday, a group of students participated in the latest Teen Writer Workshop, hosted by the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation (LRJF). The session featured Shawn Welcome, Poet Laureate of Orlando, who led an inspiring spoken word poetry workshop for high schoolers from across the area.

Thanks to their participation, several of our students are now eligible for the prestigious Teen Writer Fellow award, an honor granted to those who attend at least three workshops and submit a body of work from one of them to LRJF. This nationally recognized award celebrates students’ dedication to the craft of creative writing.

"I had a great time at the Poetry Writing Workshop last Saturday with Shawn Welcome. I went in without many expectations, and I left with a deep appreciation for the art of lyricism. Mr. Welcome guided us in how we might use different rhetorical techniques in not just poetry, but also any type of writing. I strongly suggest attending the next available LRJF workshop; they are such an enriching experience!" - Matthew Barrett '26

"The Spoken Word LRJF Workshop was an enlightening experience that taught me to break the rules of what is supposed to be poetry while using creatively placed elements in a flowing pattern. I thoroughly enjoyed the direction provided by Shawn Welcome, as he is a passionate and creative poet, and his ability to perform the astonishing poetry he creates is inspiring and reminds one of the need for poetry within our modern society." - Sophia Cetrulo '26
