Last fall, Co-Directors of College Counseling Michele Sternberg and Ann Wald hosted a special edition of Java Friday, and we discovered that many parents were unaware of the powerful resources and knowledge of this impactful team. At first glance, College Counseling doesn’t touch every division, right? It’s a benefit only for the upper school students, right? Wrong. The professionals in the College Counseling office are aligned with every division, ensuring that our students are prepared for and excited about their future.
In an environment where admission standards and standardized testing are in constant flux, Saint Edward’s is in a unique position to respond with agility. The dynamic nature of the process requires counselors who are not only well-versed in the most current policies but also bonded with students in a way that empowers them to anticipate specific needs and goals for that student. In addition, Mrs. Sternberg, Mrs. Wald and Dr. Mohr log countless hours on the road, visiting colleges and admissions deans to not only get a feel for the culture, but to get firsthand knowledge of how to open the gates to that first or second choice college.
The importance of personalized college counseling cannot be overstated. Every year, the college admissions process and standardized testing requirements shift, requiring both students and counselors to adapt to new realities. At schools like SES, where students apply to a wide range of colleges across the country—324 applications to 116 colleges in 32 states and Washington, D.C., last year alone—the value of having dedicated, individualized guidance throughout the process is immeasurable. We’re excited to kick off that official relationship with our rising ninth graders and their families on January 22, when parents are invited to join their students in an Upper School Prep event in the Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts. On that day, students will learn who their college counselor is, book their first appointment to map out their collegiate path and learn more about life in the Upper School.
Through our tailored approach, students receive the most accurate and timely advice possible, allowing them to make informed decisions that align with their goals and academic profiles. As our students evolve from a small scientist in Mrs. Hudson’s class, to a middle schooler with newly discovered fine arts talents, to a vibrant, contributing member of the Upper School, we’re here to watch, support and cheer on these young adults who are poised to make a positive impact on the world, in college and beyond.
