While learning about matter, students explored the properties of gases through hands-on investigations. To prove that gases take up space, they measured the circumference of a balloon before and after inflation. To demonstrate that gases have mass, they used problem-solving skills to determine the mass of the gas alone. Students especially enjoyed observing and describing the properties of this fizzy gas. Through this investigation, they discovered that mixing baking soda and vinegar results in a chemical change. As an extension, they also combined chemicals to create slimeworms.
