Fifth Grade Archaeologists & Astronomers

Kelly Hudson
Fifth-grade students took on the roles of archaeologists and astronomers in their study of the "Patterns of Earth and Sky" unit. An ancient astronomical artifact sparked their curiosity, motivating them to investigate daily and yearly patterns of stars. Using their observation skills to describe the artifact, students then shifted to focusing on the NGSS science practice of modeling. Through the creation and analysis of models, they explored Earth's rotation and revolution around the Sun, uncovering how these movements explain observable phenomena such as day and night, the seasons, and the apparent movement of stars. By utilizing drawings, diagrams, and physical models, students refine their understanding of celestial patterns, making these complex concepts more accessible and engaging.
